Mnemonic Systems
- Gordon Bower (1970, 1972)

- Atkinson & Raugh (1975)

- Douglas Herrmann (1987)
- Garcia & Diener (1993)
(Lorayne & Lucas, 1974)
Caruthers — car with udders(有乳房的车)
Kelly的替代词是Belly(肚子)
Wally——W

- Solso & Biersdorff (1975) A word that was not recalled was thencued by
- First letter
- Something associated with the word
- A word that rhymed
- Bédard & Chi (1993)
- that make it more accessible, functional, and efficient
Experts organize knowledge in ways
(Thomas & Robinson, 1972)
(Preview)
(Question)
(Read)
(Reflect)
(Recite)
(Review)
Extraordinary Memories
- Professional mnemonists Consciously apply a mnemonic technique
- Spontaneous mnemonists Developed more capacities Less naturally without conscious effort Without use of technique, or trick
- Also had synesthesia联觉 – A tone 30 Hz 100 db [ saw a strip 12 to 14 centimeters wide and the color of old, tarnished silver – Luria’s voice [ A crumbly yellow voice – Provided a background for each item to be recalled
- Used method of loci – Mentally distributed TBR items along a familiar street inMoscow – Errors arose from misperception rather than forgetting
- Item was not “seen”, having been “placed” in some dark corner or itwas very small
Experts and Expertise
- Experts — those with unusualcognitive abilities
- Expertise专家化 — the study ofexceptional abilities and skills
- Experts (Glaser & Chi, 1988)
- Domain specificity
- Perceive large meaningful patterns
- Fast
- Use STM/LTM effectively
- See and represent problems at a deeper level
- Fully evaluate a problem from many angles
- Self-monitoring skills
- H.O. (Humphrey Ocean)
- Expert portrait artist
- MRI, eye-tracking, motor movements
- Is an expert’s brain or brain processing different than that of a novice? (Solso, 2000)
- Novice required more blood flow to the part of the brain that processes faces (right parietal lobe) compared to H.O.
- H.O. was more efficient
- H.O. had more blood flow in the right frontal area of the cortex.
- H.O. was “thinking” the picture, while the novice was “seeing” it
- Eye-Tracking and Motor Movement
- H.O. ‘s fixation on the model was different from his “ordinary” looking pattern
- As the drawing progressed, H.O. shifted his fixations from the model to the canvas
- H.O. ’s typical fixation time during sketches was 0.6 to 1.0 sec. (novice’s was about half that time)
- Detail-to-detail process rather than holistic approach
- Hand movements astonishingly similar to the final sketch
- The structure of knowledge and expertise
- The expert has domain-specific, organized knowledge and knows how to use it efficiently and wisely.
- Chi, Feltovich, & Glaser (1981)
- Card-sorting task (physics problem)
- Novices: literal, surface features
- Experts: principles used to solve the problem
- Theoretical analysis of expertise
- Explanations of extraordinary memory operations( Chase & Ericsson, 1982)
- The mnemonic encoding principle (organization):experts encode information in terms of a large existing knowledge base.
- The retrieval structure principle (access): experts use their knowledge of a subject to develop abstract, highly specialized mechanisms for systematically encoding and retrieving meaningful patterns form LTM.
- The speed-up principle (speed): practice increases the speed with which experts recognize and encode patterns.
- Thomson & Tulving (1970)
(Godden & Baddeley, 1975)
(Eich& Metcalfe,1989)
(Ross & Landauer, 1978)
(Roediger et al., 2011)
